Robert E. Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia. This was the South's army that was so important due to it's location (between the capital cities of the two nations), Lee's army was involved in most major battles in the eastern theater of the war and did a tremendous job of blocking Union army advances onto Richmond. Jefferson Davis was the President of the C.S.A. and made most of the final decisions for the interest of the Confederacy as a nation.
