The North had a higher population. In the South a lot of the people lived on huge plantations, they were like a city in itself. Most people in the South lived very far apart from each other.

The North, on the other hand, was densely populated with huge cities. Unlike the South, they didn't rely on agriculture, but industrialism. Which is a huge advantage that they had during the Civil War.

The North had the bigger population, because most immigrants were absorbed into its increasingly industrial system. The South was feudal and had only one major industry, cotton.

The population was far greater in the North, even counting the number of slaves in the South at full value instead of three-fifths, as the Constitution stipulated.
