The Vietnamese War was a very expensive, very destructive war, in which many people died needlessly, and which failed to accomplish its objective, which was to prevent North Vietnam from conquering South Vietnam. The war cost the US roughly a trillion dollars, which may not sound like a lot today, when the national debt is about eleven trillion, but which did matter at the time. The war has left a legacy of cynicism about politics in general. Many people never got over it.
