They underestimated; The strength of the British and their Native American allies, and the loyalty of the Canadians, particularly those who had been Americans. US leaders also underestimated the degree to which corruption and failure to maintain the army had hurt its fighting ability.
During World War II, it was Adolf Hitler himself who created problems for both Germany and the German military by deciding to invade the Soviet Union. Why he did so is quite clear: he grossly underestimated the fighting ability, the general morale, and the industrial capacity of the Soviet Union, among other things. What he predicted to be a war of a single campaign turned out to be a four-year inferno that ended in the destruction of Nazi Germany.
You could say that his ability as an orator had a lot to do with why people were willing to follow him.
Possible drawbacks were the extreme punative damages extracted from Germany. Germany was made to pay £6,600 million in damages, an amount that further crippled the German economy. The occupation of the Saar district, a large industrial part of Germany. Without the industrial heartland, Germany was further crippled in it's ability to recover and destablised the government further. By making Germany accept all responsibility for the war, it made Germany a scapegoat for the entire War.
Yes. Germany was engaged in hurting and killing a lot of people. Bombing their factories limited their ability to hurt and kill others. Eventually, Germany was forced to surrender and the war ended. Sometimes it is hard to accept that war is necessary. Germany was enforcing their view of the world on other nations. Germany was killing Jews and subjugating other nations. What happened to the Jews could happen to others. For the basic rights of humanity, and the lives of many peoples, Germany had to be stopped. Both Germany and Japan made miscalculations about the power of the United States and its impact if it entered the war.Germany and Japan underestimated the US ability to produce large numbers of high quality weapons, aircraft, ships, vehicles, and ammunition in sufficient time to be used against them, as early as 1942. They also underestimated the US ability to greatly increase the size of the US Merchant Marine fleet to support the world-wide operations of the US & its Allies. They underestimated the ability of the US to build a large Army and a very large Air Force. They underestimated the fighting capability and skill of the US soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and merchant sailors, and the skill & leadership of the Generals and Admirals. They greatly underestimated the fighting resolve & steadfastness of the US nation to overcome all obstacles to force the unconditional surrender of both Germany and Japan.

In "The Lion and the Beetle," the lion's arrogance and pride prevented him from seeing the potential threat posed by the tiny beetle. The lion underestimated the beetle's intelligence and ability to outsmart him, leading to his downfall in the end.

The only person with that ability is the operator service. They can do it if they need to keep a line open - in the case of someone who's seriously ill or in a burning house etc.
