The draft had been operating before the Vietnam War; Elvis Presley was drafted into the US Army in 1958, serving on an M-48 Patton tank (the same tank used in the Vietnam War). He served in Europe, assigned to the 1/32 Armor (tank battalion): See film; "GI Blues", starring Elvis Presley. The draft ended in the US in 1973, the same year the US pulled out of Vietnam.

Nixon received an extension of the draft after 1971, men were still capable of being inducted into military service until the end of the Vietnam War in the early 1970's. Conscription was going FULL STEAM in the 1960's.

The drafting of US men into the US Military did NOT end in 1962. The draft continued from WW2 thru the Korean War until the end of the Vietnam War (for US forces) in 1973. Nixon had received a draft extension during the war.
