World War 1, like the US Civil War, was one of the first modern wars. Many of the tactics were from the 19th century, while the weapons were from the 20th century.
The machinery of war was more efficient than ever before, for example, tanks and airplanes were never used in war before. The industrial revolution enabled more effective killing machines to be produced, at a much faster rate. The resulting carnage shocked the world.
Thanks to industrialization the creation of weapons was quicker and more efficient. Also Eli Whitney's interchangeable parts allowed for the continuous use of guns. For example, if the trigger on a gun broke it could be easily replaced by taking the gun apart and simply putting it back together. In addition to that, the power and accuracy of weapons increased drastically. All the above lead to more devastating warfare including the Somme battle of WW1 which lead to 1.5 million casualties.

Industrialism was a indirect cause of WW1. By industrialism, strong nations such as Germany, Russia, France and Great Britain had increased their machinery and weaponry. This caused rivalry and tensions between these countries. Also, because of the rivalry, the people in the countries all had a increase in nationalism.
Thus, nations began to team up against each other and eventually, with the assassination of archduke Ferdinand, WW1 broke out.
Industrialization contributed greatly to the outbreak of World War 1. Some European countries did not to be left out in economic development and the clamour for resources is what led to the war among other factors.
Imperialism was actually the big thing. So many countries wanted to expand and gain new territories and colonies (imperialism) that it lead to disputes between countries: the imperialistic one and the one getting taken over. Many countries already had alliences with others, so when two countries started fighting, their allies got involved. Then THEIR allies got involved, and so on and so forth.
