Since the geography of Japan was basically an island, Japan was isolated. This made it hard for Japan to gain access of things outside of their islands but it also helped them to be a more independent place and also to keep their way of living.

Actually, you're right since it is surrounded by water, making it easy to travel by ships, plus it is closer to China or Korea (also surrounding it).
