Obtain the book: "Journey Into Darkness", by (LTC) Philip E. Smith & Peggy Herz; published in 1992. ISBN 067-1728-237. While on a combat mission near North Vietnam, LTC Smith's F-104 STARFIGHTER was shot down in aerial combat by a Red Chinese MIG-19 (J-6 version) after straying too close to their border. This book might answer some of your questions.
