While on a combat mission near North Vietnam, LTC Smith's F-104 STARFIGHTER was shot down in aerial combat by a Red Chinese MIG-19 (J-6 version) after straying too close to their border. My father was captured in 1943 by the Germans and shipped to northern Greece to a POW camp. He was captured near the town of Nevesinje. The POW camp was near Salonkia, Greece.
Most US Soldierss were not captured. Those circumstances were usually reserved for US Airmen who had been shot down over North Vietnam. Torture may have occurred to those downed airmen, whose status was POW (Prisoner of War). Refer to books and websites concerning POWs in the Vietnam War.
