Following the presidential election of 1876, Southern Democrats were able to negotiate the end of Reconstruction with Republicans in Congress because the electoral college could not declare a clear winner, sending the decision to the House of Representatives. In order for the Republican candidate to win, the Republicans agreed to end Reconstruction in 1877.

In respect to the post-Civil War era in America, the most direct answer to the question why conservative Southern Democrats eventually reasserted their control throughout much of the South is this: they believed their political vision for society to be superior to any other. It should be noted that the particular visions of some Southern Democrats were more inclusive than others; however, it was the White-centric policy of the majority that eventually won out in most Southern states.
