The US Civil War caused the Federal Government to increase production of certain products to help fight the Civil War. The result was more profits for these industries. For example, the Federal Government placed increased orders for:

  • The manufacturing of soldier uniforms;
  • The production of more farm crops to feed the Union armies;
  • The production of more ships to carry soldiers and supplies;
  • The production of more firearms and artillery for military use; and
  • The production for more wagons and carts to carry men, arms and supplies to its soldiers.

In order to produce the above items, the northern industries had to hire more employees and import more materials to manufacture the items needed by the Federal government.
