Three excellent consequences of Rolling Thunder:

1. The creation of air to air combat training (Dog-Fighting) schools; Top Gun for the USN and Red Flag for the USAF.

2. Reinstallling guns back onto to modern jets.

3. The creation of "Wild Weasels"; SAM killing jets.

Operation Rolling Thunder was the continuous air campaign begun by the US in March 1965.

What was the objective of the US in Operation Rolling Thunder?

The objective of Operation: Rolling Thunder was originally an 8 week bombing campaign that targeted industrial, logistical and military complexes so as to prevent support from North Vietnam to the Viet Cong in the South, it lasted for 3 years approximately and was widen to some civilian targets too, it also targeted the Ho Chi Minh Trail, with little success.

Who launched operation rolling thunder?

This was an air campaign conducted by the US Air Force & US Naval Airmen. Operation Rolling Thunder was the code name given to us bombings of strategic targets in North Vietnam is 1965. It was used by the US, under president Johnson. This method was used in order to put pressure on the south, in order to make them stop supplying the vietcong, end the war and start negotiations. However, it brought no end to the conflict and failed to have any impact on the war.

Is it acceptable to use the term 'escalation' when refering to the troops that Johnson sent into Vietnam?

"Escalation" means to increase; an appropiate term. The war did escalate; it went from a guerrilla war of US military advisers and small unit contacts...to B-52 stratofortress bombers and hi-tech jet fighter plane dog-fights (aerial combat) over the skies of North Vietnam (Operation Rolling Thunder).
