Operation Rolling Thunder
Operation Rolling Thunder was the continuous air campaign begun by the US in March 1965.
The objective of Operation: Rolling Thunder was originally an 8 week bombing campaign that targeted industrial, logistical and military complexes so as to prevent support from North Vietnam to the Viet Cong in the South, it lasted for 3 years approximately and was widen to some civilian targets too, it also targeted the Ho Chi Minh Trail, with little success.
This was an air campaign conducted by the US Air Force & US Naval Airmen. Operation Rolling Thunder was the code name given to us bombings of strategic targets in North Vietnam is 1965. It was used by the US, under president Johnson. This method was used in order to put pressure on the south, in order to make them stop supplying the vietcong, end the war and start negotiations. However, it brought no end to the conflict and failed to have any impact on the war.
The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution on 7 August 1964. The beginning of Operation Rolling Thunder in February of 1965. The Marine Landing at DaNang of two Marine Infantry Battalions on 8 March 1965. The US begining the bombing of Haiphong on 29 January 1966. The deceision by the President not to seek re-election on 31 March 1968.

US conventional forces arrived in '65. Rolling Thunder was an AIR CAMPAIGN against North Vietnam! Had nothing to do with the ground war in South Vietnam.
