The Vietnam War officially ended in April 1975 during the Fall of Saigon. The United States withdrew in 1973, therefore leaving the South Vietnamese Army to defend the country by themselves. North Vietnam had agreed to a cease fire in 1973, and the US had to withdraw under the agreement.
By late 1973, North Vietnam broke this agreement and went on to capture most of South Vietnam. In April 1975, the government of South Vietnam resigned and the NVA took control of Saigon, before the communists took control, there was a massive helicopter evacuation of Saigon.
