If the USA was not a democracy and the administration did not have to worry about the lives of the voters sons and daughters they would keep it going indefinitely, However they may also commit so many troops that they would gain control. but you cant control a people that is committed to freeing themselves from an invader.

What was president Johnson known for?

While he would have liked to have been remembered for his "great society" which brought us medicare, the civil rights act, and other such programs to help the poor, the unfortunate truth is he will probably always be remembered as the president that ramped up the Vietnam war. As long as there are Vietnam era people still alive he will be remembered as the president that fully commited American troops to the Vietnam conflict that resulted in over 50,000 American troops being killed. There were riots in the streets of America protesting the war. The country was pretty much on edge over the whole issue.
