The bloodiest day of the Civil War was that of the Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862 between McClellan's Union Army and Lee's Confederate Army near Sharpsburg, Maryland.
It was a minor Union tactical victory but a major strategic one, because Lee gave up this campaign into the North and retreated toward Virginia, crossing the Potomac on the night of September 18. He would face a similar defeat a year later at Gettysburg.
Lee lost 13,724 men, including 2,700 killed.
The Federals lost 12,140, of which 2,108 were killed.
This battle was the bloodiest one in all of US Military history. No other day in any war saw this many American deaths and casualties. As many were lost in one day as in two days at the Battle of Shiloh, as on any day at the Battle of Gettysburg, or on the second day of the Battle of Chancellorsville.
The Union victory was significant enough to lead Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves in occupied regions of the South, and further preventing the South from obtaining recognition and aid from other countries.
