One point that comes to my mind is the strength of the US was realized. In the 1860's we were fighting among ourselves. By 1960 the world realized how strong we were when pushed and some of the resources we had available including the strength of character of the American people. We no longer were a country absorbed with itself - we became a world power able to help those around us.
