I think it was very significant. Nazi ideology was predicated on the notion of the superiority of the Germanic race both ideologically and culturally. This ideology was incompatible with Germany's total defeat and humiliation in 1918. It suited therefore to perpetuate a myth that Germany had not been defeated but rather "stabbed in the back" by bourgeoise politicians and jews. It allowed soldiers to return "unvanquished" and politicians to rant at the unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles. This was another cornerstone of Nazi ideology.

The salute is not racist in itself. But since it is a representation of the Nazi regime, which stood for a racist ideology, doing it now invokes the feelings of anti-Semitism. Much like how the swastika is, in fact, an ancient Indian symbol representing life, its use now has been bastardized by Nazi Germany. The salute is not racist in itself. The ideology of Nazism as it is currently perceived was developed by the Nazi Party in the post World War I era. It was a nationalistic response to communism and marxism, and sought to unite the German nation with one leader, ridding it of the so-called inferior races and create one single cultural identity.
