The US had been lending money, weapons and ships to the British war effort from the outbreak of war in 1939. However, the US's official stance was neutral and so did not openly oppose Hitler and the Nazis. It wasnt until 1940 that US formally entered the war as a result of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. The Axis power of Japan wanted to control the entire pacific region which meant defeating the US. At this point, American troops arrived in Africa to aid the beleagured British forces. In 1944, a massive Allied army of US and British soldiers landed at Normandy (more commonly known as D-Day) on the coast of France and began forcing back the German army across Europe. In may 1945, the Nazis capitulated to the victorious allies (V E Day). two months later, Japan followed with the dropping of the first atomic bombs (V J Day).
