By April of 1865, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was in a state of irreversible repair. Food was in short supply if any, and Grant had Lee surrounded. Grant sent a letter to Lee urging him to "cease all resistance, ...." The only chance Lee had was no chance at all. His depleted army of less than 30,000, he would have to fight an estimated Union force of 80,000 troops to escape to Lynchburg.

Grant and Lee met in the home of Wilmer McClean at the Appomattox Court House. There the surrender papers were signed. For all practical purposes the war was over. However, not officially over as there were thousands of other Confederate troops in the South and else where.

The chief military commander of the Confederacy was General Robert E. Lee who headed the Army of Northern Virginia. He surrendered to the same position in the Union, General Ulysses S. Grant, who headed the Army of the Potomac on April 9, 1865 at the Appomattox Courthouse.

In Appomattox Court House, Virginia. A popular misconception is that the surrender occurred at the Appomattox courthouse. It was actually the name of the village.

What is the name of the civil war battle that was fought a month after the civil war was over and the south had surrendered at appomattox courthouse?

The battle which you allude to is the Union pursuit of Maury's Confederate garrison from Mobile Alabama to Montgomery. Union troops had assaulted the forts around Mobile on 9 April 1865. causing the Confederates to abandon that seaport. They marched to Montgomery and garrisoned that town, not surrendering until ordered to do so by General Kirby Smith, overall commander of the Trans Mississippi Confederacy, on 4 May 1865. In addition there were skirmishes in Texas up until the end of May 1865. Kirby Smith and his Trans-Mississippi Department did not officially surrender until 30 May 1865 to General Canby of the Union Army.

French surrender to Nazis also known as Second Armistice took place at Northern French town of Compiegne. This was a deliberate choice of Hitler as Compiegne was the same place where first armistice took place after World War I after Germany's surrender.
