This was the age of traditional armies; political correctness had not taken hold of armies back then; the communists used females to man anti-aircraft sites (AAA sites) in North Vietnam while their men marched south to fight. They used women to carry supplies, administer medical support, and repair support. US and allied armies utilized females primarily in the medical fields. In US organizations, US females were always VOLUNTEERS.
US Civil War, Spanish-American War, WW1, WW2, the Korean War, Vietnam War, only men fought wars. US Military women were part of the US Army's WAC's (Women's Army Corps); US Marines WM (Women Marines), US Air Force WAF's (Women in the Air Force), and the US Navy's WAVE's (Women Allowed Voluntary Emergency).
Women volunteered for the military, and in most cases, volunteered for Vietnam; nearly all served as nurses.

First of all, the name is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is not a memorial to war. It is a memorial to those who were called to serve. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors all American military persons who served in the war and specifically names the 58,260 who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Eight were women. It was built in Washington, DC because that is the capital of the USA. A group of Vietnam War veterans organized getting government approval to build on a US National Park but the money to build it was donated by the general public. They recognized that the bitterness and confusion about the war left relatives and friends of the fallen without a sense of pride. Anti-war protesters of the time frequently blamed the war on those who were called to serve. More details are on the web site, see the link below.
