== == The official name of the unit was "The First Special Service Force " and it was a combined unit of both Canadian and American soldiers, who were trained as special mountain fighters, who could ski and snowshoe, and also be dropped as parachute troops. The Americans were in many cases sent to the unit from military jails, and were hard core tough guys, while the Canadians were specially selected for their past experience in the bush as trappers and lumberjacks, who could live outdoors all winter if they had to. many of the Americans were also Southerners, who had never seen snow before. They were trained in winter survival and skiing in Montana, and fought first in Italy, and later in 1944 in France. Ironically, they never used skiis or jumped by parachute into a combat mission. The nick name was created by a US Army newspaper reporter, who wrote a very over the top story about their actions in Italy. In the 1960's there was a FICTIONAL motion picture made in Hollywood that was loosely based on the unit. The title was " The Devils Brigade " and it starred the American Cliff Robertson as the unit's commander. It is very well made but the actions are hopelessly un-military and would never have been done in real combat. In other words, pure Hollywood BS.
The Devil's Brigade was organised in 1942.

1.) Devils den was formed over 180 million years ago under and within the beds of sandstone and shale that covered the area and over time was forced upward between existing strata. Where the sheet has been exposed to the seasonal freezing of water in the crevices and cracks, it has broken into smaller pieces that have been weathered over the years into separate boulders. Devils Den gained importance in the second day of the fighting near Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, with a Confederate assault by Lt. Gen. James Longstreet's First Corps through this terrain. Conducted by the division of Maj. Gen. John Bell Hood, and including both the Texas Brigade and 3rd Arkansas, the charge was directed towards the left flank of the Union Army of the Potomac and hit Devil's Den as well as the high ground at Little Round Top. Devil's Den was defended by the Union III Corps division of Maj. Gen. David B. Birney, later reinforced by the V Corps.
