The South China Sea on 10 December 1941 was the first big battle in the Pacific (discounting Pearl Harbor). This particular battle proved once and for all that the battleship was no longer ruler of the seas.

British battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse were both sunk strictly by Japanese ARMY airplanes. No more excuses this time about battleships not being able to maneuver and fight back while upon the high seas! As battleship Admirals argued when General Billy Mitchell sunk "Target Battleships" (unmanned, not moving, and not shooting back) in the 1920's. This time, airmen proved without a doubt, that battleships were obsolete and airpower (via the aircraft carrier) was the new RULER of the seas.

The Java Sea is where the FIRST major sea battle occurred in the Pacific. The Battle of the Java Sea was the largest cruiser fleet action of WWII (February 1942).

Where was the majority of the Civil War fougth?

It was mostly fought in the South, but I'm not sure in what state the majority was fought in. About half of the major battles were fought in Virginia and Tennessee. However, the battles that formed the "turning points" of the war were in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Vicksburg, Mississippi. The first battle was in Charleston, South Carolina and the last major battle was in North Carolina.
