The Confederate states had a rural, agricultural economy, The Union was an Industrial economy. In a nutshell, the North outproduced the South in the production of war material, and in getting it to the soldiers. This is the science of logistics- equipping and caring for soldiers- or as it is sometimes expressed, beans, bullets, and bandages.

They had a far better President, who learned how to choose and use the best Generals.

They had a much bigger population from which to recruit armies. (Grant's final campaign was simple attrition.)

What was one of the reasons why there was a Civil War?

First of all what civil war are we talking about. If we are talking about the American Civil war the one that happened from 1861-1865 then there are many reasons as to why this war started. Some can say it was about slavery, some can say the south just wanted there own country. But the main reason is that the North did not want slavery anymore, since the rest of the world pretty much outlawed slavery America did not want to be seen as barbaic low class people. Also the North was becoming more of the city life where the South was staying like a farm so they needed slaves to run the large acres of land

What started the first civil war?

I don't know what you mean by the first civil war, but the US war, 1861-1865 war started for many reasons. One of them is slavery. Another is some of the states did not like the type of government that was enforced. Those were the main reasons. There were many smaller ones, such as, the Indians fought mainly because they did not like the other tribe. Some men fought just to get revenge. Those just scratch the surface.
