The issue of US involvement in Vietnam was deeply divisive in America itself, perhaps more so than any other issue in the 20th century. American involvement was also very costly in terms of lives (American and Vietnamese) and achieved nothing worthwhile. Others will no doubt have different views on this.

One statistic is that 58,220 Americans, men and women, died fighting the war. At the time, this was about equal to one year's automobile deaths. It was the first time there was widespread opposition to the war. The purpose, as I understood it 40 years ago, was that the US was fighting to avoid the domino effect of communism taking over more countries in Asia. The French had fought unsuccessfully for years before the US became involved. It was possibly the first unwinnable war.
