People who are opposed to violence and war are usually called pacifists. It was coined by French peace activist Émile Arnaud, and was adopted at the Tenth Universal Peace Congress in Glasgow, United Kingdom, in 1901.

Another type of person who opposes warfare is the supporter of nonviolence. Pacifists and followers of nonviolence are very similar, but are not the same. Pacifists oppose all forms of violence and conflict, while nonviolent followers seek to achieve their goals through peaceful non-cooperation, but don't necessarily avoid conflict.
