California never was a slave state, but in January 1856 she was granted a petition for freedom as a resident of a free state. She had been owned by a man named Smith and when she was granted her freedom so did the other slaves Smith owned. Biddy was a nurse and midwife and after saving for years in 1866 she bought two lots and was the first African American woman to own property in LA. In 1872 she founded the first African American church in LA and donated the land it was built on. By the 1800's because of her investments she was the wealthiest African American woman in LA. She died at the age of 73 in 1891.
