After the Emancipation Proclamation, blacks rushed to joined the Union Army. At the end of the war, there were nearly 180,000 black soldiers in the Union Army.

During the US Civil War, Blacks/Afro-Americans fought for the Union and numbered about 350,000. The South authorized Black soldiers in early 1865. The number is difficult to estimate.
