Fort Knox in Bucksport, Maine, was constructed between 1844 and 1869. It was built to protect the Penobscot River and the surrounding area from potential naval attacks. The fort is named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War. Today, it serves as a historic site and is part of Fort Knox State Historic Site.
