As Russian military resistance began to collapse in the final year of World War I, German military leadership directed their troops farther eastward to ensure complete defeat of the Russians and a favorable peace treaty. Especially after such a treaty was signed (in March of 1918) the Staff soon transferred units to the Western Front in preparation for yet another summer offensive against the Western Allies.
