XV Corps was created in December 1862 when the 11th, 5th and 8th divisions of the Thirteen Corps were re-assigned as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions of the XV Corps under General Sherman. It participated in the "Bayou Expeditions" (May-July 1863) which included the Vicksburg campaign. After the surrender of Vicksburg, the XV Corps remained in the Vicksburg area until September 1863. In September of 1863, the bulk of XV Corps moved to Memphis, the 3rd Division remained in Vicksburg. The 3rd Division was replaced a division from the XVII Corps and a 4th Division was added which came from the XVI Corps.
In October 1863, Sherman was promoted to command of the entire Army of Tennessee and command of the XV Corps was given to General Frank P. Blair. The Army of Tennessee consisted of three corps including the XV Corps.
In November 1863, XV Corps fought in the battels of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge in the Chattanooga area.
XV Corps was moved to Knoxville to counter Longstreet's siege of Knoxville. They arrived in Knoxville on December 6, 1863, however Longstreet had already broken off the siege and retreated eastward. XV Corps then went into winter quarters in northern Alabama.
In the spring and summer of 1864, XV Corps participated in the Atlanta campaign which ended with the surrender on August 31, 1864.
In November 1864, the Army of Tennessee including the XV Corps became the southern wing of Sherman's march to the sea proceeding from Atlanta to Savannah by December 21, 1864. The XV Corps then marched through the Carolinas to Washington DC arriving on May 20, 1865.
