The union withdrew back across the Rappahannock, moved upstream and attempted to cross at Chancellorville. Lee's army reversed to engage, except for Stonewall Jackson who withdrew and pushed his army on an extended day march to the west which surprised the union troops on their right flank, causing them to retreat in disarray. Jackson later that night while inspecting his forward lines was shot by his own sharp shooter and later died of his wounds.
