USSR Role in WW2The Soviet Union had a very important and the decisive role in WWII. Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. Most of the German troops were involved in the combats at the eastern front. So they couldn't fight at the western front. Most of the best material and soldiers had to be reserved for the eastern front. During the invasion in 1944 the allies found a better "kindergarten" and not the real "wehrmacht". This is the main reason for the defeat of Germany.

The Soviet Union had to pay a very high price for this victory. Only 1944, the Red Army lost 52.7 percent or 13,800 of the medium tanks which included the number available at the beginning of the year and those received from production. 13,600,000 soldiers of the Soviet Union died during the war at eastern front. Germany lost 3,500,000 soldiers during the whole war.

Russia was an ally of the western powers (the good guys)until the war ended then things changed. Joseph Stalin wanted to control all of Germany. To do this he put up what was know as the Berin blockade (Russia Occupied all the land around Berlin) trying to force the USA and it's allies to give in and give him control of Berin. The allies developed what was called the Berin air lift, they flew supplies, food, fuel, medical, clothing and everything else that Berlin needed, into Berlin on an around the clock basis until Stalin opened the corridor. This was the beginning of the cold war that lasted into modern times. I believe it was President Reagan that was in office when the cold war ended.

Until about 1941 i think, the USSR as it was known then was actually allied with the Nazis until it was attacked without warning by the Nazis under Hitler's dreams of a world without communists and vast living space for Germany. During WW2 Russia by far made the biggest sacrifice, it had no choice, the Nazis were fighting a war of extermination, believing the communists to be sub human they would not stop till they were all dead or captured. The USSR lost around 20 million people (about the current population of Tokyo), this was mainly because the USSR was the most incompetent fighting force ever, it is estimated that of 90% of USSR soldiers who died didn't even have a gun. The whole time they relied on the fact that they could just overwhelmed the Nazis and eventually just grind them down. During the war the USSR delivered the largest blow to the Nazis, at the beginning they lost many men in Josef Stalin's 'not a step back' policy, then they turned the tide at Stalingrad and begun the long bloody push back to Berlin. Although most of the credit of winning the war goes to the USA and Britain, they did little compared to the USSR and this can be seen by the fact that the Nazis had about three times as many men fighting the USSR then America and Britain on the Western Front.

The Soviet Union's role in WWII was to absorb and destroy the Wehrmacht's ability to wage war. This is an overstatement. If you look at some of the loses suffered by the Soviet Union, 600,000 surrender here, 250,000 there, etc. This happened many times. The western allies could in no way have taken loses like this and stayed in the war. Because of the vast manpower reserves of the Soviet Union and their willingness to spend the lives of their soldiers, they became the anvil for the hammer of the allied bombing campaign to destroy the ability of the 3rd Recih to wage war

One word would describe everything: chaos. Draft would take people old enough to fight for homeland but even if you were a teen or pre-teen you could still join military. That's why so many young people died, they wanted to protect their land. Also, seen that all resources went to fight Nazis crime rate increased. Mostly, robberies, rapes, stuff like that. Even though prisons were filling up fast USSR's gov't began sending prisoners to front line. They would earn their freedom by dying or going alive through war. However, if they would do anything wrong like run away or disobey it was immidiate death by gun, showing any fear is death, if the order is to attack and you start to retrieve a unit called MKVD (don't remember what it stands for) it was like military police, would gun them down without hesitation. They would say something like, "You will by your freedom with your blood". Also, MKVD did some other work. If you got out of POW camp from Nazis and came home. MKVD would start saying that they let you go as a spy, that's why so many people got shot for running away from Nazis, in file they would state "Treason, enemy of the state". Some people even though they didn't do anything wrong would sign confession to escape execution, and then they would be put back on front line with other prisoners. USSR was a big mess inside, factories that were making goods for people (cars, tools, etc) were making weapons and ammunition. Basically, USSR resources went to win the war. Leave more specific questions, its easier to answer them.

ALTERNATIVE ANSWER:

The Soviet Union withstood the most intense, brutal and totally destructive fighting in the entire war in the European Theater. Having been overrun by the brunt of the largest invasion force in human history - an unprecedented 3 to 4.5 million Axis troops in 1941 - the people of the USSR found themselves in the midst of a struggle which was explicitly described as a "War of Extermination". Tens of millions of Eastern Europeans were occupied by German troops, who had managed to conquer large stretches of the Soviet Union by the 1941-42 winter. So the inhabitants, who were willfully targeted for extermination, were in a fight for their very survival, as bloody massacres and wholesale starvation took place as a matter of course. While the Soviet state, society and people were in an a state of utter desperation and confusion, the Eastern Front was also the site of some of the worst and most widespread atrocities committed against European Jews during the Holocaust. On the brink of annihilation, the citizens of the USSR were never safe.

However, the vast stretches of Soviet territory provided cover and refuge for reinforcements to be assembled, for counterattacks to be prepared, and for the large-scale industrial capacity of the USSR to be re calibrated. The mass reserves in armaments, people, and foreign munitions aid also helped. Within two years of hideous fighting, the entire society and war machinery, economic instrumentation and administrative apparatus of the Soviet state was oriented toward recovery and expulsion of the bloody occupiers. Eventually, the German forces were held in check and forced to retreat in some of the largest battles of the entire war, including Stalingrad, Leningrad, Moscow, Minsk and Kursk. With the Fascist armies in rapid withdraw, the Red Army ultimately triumphed when it vanquished those armed remnants of the Third Reich in the battle of Berlin (1945), ensuring a foothold of Communist rule in Eastern Europe for nearly 50 years.

Ruthless and ambitious, Joseph Stalin grabbed control of the Soviet Union after the death of V.I. Lenin in 1924. As a member of the Bolshevik party, Stalin (his adopted name meaning "Man of Steel") had an active role in Russia's October Revolution in 1917. He maneuvered his way up the communist party hierarchy, and in 1922 was named General Secretary of the Central Committee. By the end of the 1920s Stalin had expelled his rival Leon Trotsky, consolidated power, and was the de facto dictator of the Soviet Union. In the 1930s Stalin summarily executed his political enemies and started aggressive industrial and agricultural programs that left untold thousands of peasants dead. During World War II Stalin was the commander of the Soviet military, and attended the postwar conferences at Yalta, Teheran and Potsdam. After Stalin's death he was denounced by his successor, Nikita Khrushchev, and "Stalinism" was officially condemned.

The USSR didn't win World War 2 on its own. It needed the combined forces of the USSR, US and the British Empire to defeat Nazi Germany.
