Most of the slaves went back into sharecropping because they had no money and no life outside of their plantations. So they stayed and were paid with food. Despite the efforts of the northern Republicans, de facto slavery continued long after the Civil War.

the slaves were freed but they weren't given very fair laws. the slaves were put on very strict laws they were given curfues because the whites thought now that they were free they would come and get them in the night and because of that fear slaves were treated the same way but after a few days the blacks were allowed to vote alot of whites didn't like the idea of treating the slaves the same thus the ku klux klan was created that is a differant story ^_~
