When the Royalist lost the English Civil War, King Charles I was thrown in prison and Oliver Cromwell took over the government becoming the Lord Protector of England. During this time a lot of social legislation was passed. It would remain on the books. Then the King was beheaded. Any legislation after this time would automatically be overturned. That way, England got rid of its most restrictive Puritanical restrictions. After Cromwell died, Charles II became king. England returned to its merry old ways.

Some historians argue that the Battle of Naseby was the turning point of the English Civil War. Parliament's New Model Army, established by Cromwell and Sir Thomas Fairfax (among others), was now able to defeat the Royalists regularly. It was well-trained and equipped, as well as paid regularly so it was reliable.

However, other historians say that the battle of Marston Moor (1644) was when the King's forces started to lose. The King's power in the North of England was broken and never recovered. From then on, these historians say, there was no chance that the Royalists could win the war. This is despite the fact that the Royalists managed to defeat a Parliamentarian army at Lostwithiel in Cornwall.

Some historians say that Charles' only chance of winning was a quick victory. In October 1642 the Battle of Edgehill gave him the chance to advance on London. However, he failed to attack Parliament's forces at Brentford. Therefore, this argument goes, the war continued, but with less and less chance of the Royalists winning.
