Etc. Cop shows were only beginning at that time. During the 60's & 70's the only TV Cop shows were, "Car 54 Where Are You?", "Adam 12", "The Mod Squad", "Hawaii 50", "Dragnet", "Perry Mason", "The Defenders", to name a few.

But the primary reason for that was because the director of the movie, Oliver Stone, had served in the 25th Infantry Division (depicted in the movie), fought in Vietnam, and experienced some of the actions depicted on the screen; as well as going thru the experiences of the charactor portrayed by actor Charly Sheen. Many, if not most, movie directors have not been in a war. That lack of experience will be reflected in their movies.
