The armies that fought from trenches during the war had their men "Stand to" in their trenches just before dawn, with rifles loaded and bayonets fixed for between a half hour and an hour, to be prepared for enemy attacks, should they come. In some places in the line, some armies had a ritual called the 'Morning Hate' which occurred at 'Stand To' and involved relieving the tension of the early hours with machine gun fire, shelling and small arms fire, directed at the trenches opposite them, without any particular targets or objectives. This made doubly sure of safety at dawn but was by-and-large, a waste of ammunition.
