Most people in the Holocaust did not speak English, so no they would not have called them flats, they would have used whatever the term was in their own language. Of course flats existed in the forties, but they were not as common as they are now, but at any rate the translations and texts would have been written closer to the present time, therefore they use language that we use now; hence the use of the word 'flat' do describe an apartment within a larger building.
American soldiers were partially trained in the Vietnam language before they left to fight, but most certainly did use a language dictionary while there. It didn't take them long to pick up some of the language fast because it kept them alive. Many American soldiers (depending on where they were stationed) could speak fluent Vietnamese.
He spoke German (language of Austria), he may have been able to speak a few word's in English but its not entirely known. I think its been proved that he spoke a bit of Italian as well but I'm not too sure.
He spoke German, albeit with a bit of an Austrian accent.
Yes, quite a large percentage do, but not on a fluent scale. Due to English being a subject which all Germans must take at school and English being the international language, it is quite popular in Germany and has even led to the creation of Denglisch(English words making their way into the German language, i.e. to verb to download, usually is herunterladen although downloaden has become popular).Germans often swear quite a lot in English as opposed to German which shocks some people, so be careful if you're a tourist because there's a good chance people know what you're saying!All-in-all, a good percentage of the population speak basic English, but know more hoarse language, too.
