Ho Chi Minh didn't play any role in the Cold War; he had no interest in it.

.

The role that he played was the leader of one side in a civil war. Sadly, the greatest critic of this piece of international theatre was the United States. They had developed a theory to which they were wedded - the Domino Theory.

.

The US re-wrote Ho's part to make him an enemy of democracy and of freedom. Ho didn't change anything , but the State Department put a different spin on it. Most of us believed it, not knowing any better.

.

Then, after 50,000 dead Americans and more than 1,000,000 Vietnamese, the Vietnamese got what Ho had wanted all along : the free elections that Vietnam was promised at the Geneva peace talks after the colonial French had been defeated. Ho's party was elected, the world did not end, other countries in the region did not go communist, the USSR has collapsed and the cold war is something in the past.

.

China is going strong, but the suggestion of an alliance between China and Vietnam is risible. The two have been enemies for more than a thousand years.
