Philadelphia was centrally located among the thirteen colonies and so had been host to the First Continental Congress, and the Second. The Second was the one which Declared Independence, and adopted the Articles of Confederation and continued to run the country until the new Constitution was adopted in 1788. The Congress met in the Pennsylvania State House, a nice brick building completed just before the Revolution in Philadelphia and today called Independence Hall. Philadelphia was the capital of America during most of the war. The British captured Philadelphia in September 1777, and held it until June 1778, when they decided to abandon Philadelphia and concentrate their men in New York.
Pennsylvania was the location of many major battles. Most famously, the events at Valley Forge (where the Americans suffered through a harsh winter without giving up and going home). Also, the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of the Clouds, the Paoli Massacre, Battle of Germantown, Siege of Fort Mifflin and Whitemarsh.
