The southernmost point in Florida is slightly further south than the southernmost point in Texas. Brownsville TX is at latitude 25.90; Key West FL is at latitude 24.55. (One degree of latitude is about 69 miles; there's a bit of Texas that dips down even below Brownsville, but only by about 10 miles, nowhere near the 100 miles that would be required to put it south of Key West).

South Carolina was the first Confederate state to secede, on December 20, 1860. Five more states seceded in January (Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana), and Texas in February, with the remainder (Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina) following the outbreak of hostilities (April-May).
Texas was a southern state during the Civil War.
After the war started, all eyes were on the four slave-states of the Upper South that had not seceded - Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware. All of these were deeply divided states with plenty of Confederate sentiment, but Lincoln managed to keep them loyal.
