In the continental US, buried deep beneath the earth were USAF ICBM's in missile silos (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles). The USN patrolled the oceans with nuclear powered submarines: Boomers & Fast Attack. Boomers were armed with naval versions of ICBMs; Fast Attack subs were hunter killer subs, designed to kill Soviet submarines.
