The US Air Force & US Navy are strategic forces; they can traverse the globe 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year...year after year. The US Army (The US Marine Corps are part of the US Navy) is a tactical force; it can ONLY fight when & where the Air Force or Navy puts them. During the cold war, US strategies involved the USAF/USN constantly patrolling the globe (earth); the USAF was armed with SAC (Strategic Air Command) B-52 Stratofortess bombers, each loaded with an Atomic Weapon, these bombers were airborne 24-7 on a rotation basis. In the continental US, buried deep beneath the earth were USAF ICBM's in missile silos (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles). The USN patrolled the oceans with nuclear powered submarines: Boomers & Fast Attack. Boomers were armed with naval versions of ICBMs; Fast Attack subs were hunter killer subs, designed to kill Soviet submarines.
