WWI (or the Great War of 1914-1918) was preceeded by about forty years of militarism, Imperialism, and nationalism. In 1867, the Germanic kingdom of Prussia declared war on Austria for the region of Schelgish?-Holstein, a region gained through a brief conflict with Denmark. In 1867, Prussia humiliated and defeated Austria in the conflict referred to as the Seven Weeks War. Spontaneously, the French under Emperor Napoleon III along with the Italian Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia under Cavour fought against the Austrians in the South. Austria promised Prussia that it would, from then on, stay out of German affairs. Three years later, France declared war on Prussia after an insult from Otto Von Bismarck on the account of the French Emperor meeting with the Prussian King. In 1870, the Franco-Prussian War was ignited and proved disastrous for the French. At the Battle of Sedan in 1870, Emperor Napoleon III was captured by the Prussians. The French Second Empire collapsed as the Paris Commune was established. After Paris was about to encounter starvation, the French Commune surrendered to the Prussians, resulting in the unification of Germany through Prussia. The German Empire was united as King William I of Prussia was crowned Kaiser Wilhem I of the German Empire at Versailles. France was outraged. The French Third Republic came to power after the Franco-Prussian War. It swore to avenge France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and regain the provinces of Alsace-Lorraine it had lost as a result. Italy
Overall war effort was massive, people from every class in society contributed in some way to help with the large scale problems WW1 Presented examples of such would be middle class women voluntering to work alongside the working class in munitions factories, men volunteered to join the army but conscription was soon introduced to increase numbers on the home front,Mothers and wives filling the jobs men had left behind to stop the economy from crumbling in a mass debt. The government itself pulled together when lyold george took control he overlooked every aspect of the war to increase productivity,he expanded DORA -defence of the realm act which tightned the governments grip on the economy.
