Ronald Reagan brought us "Supply side economics" which reduced the taxes on business so they could use the the money to re-tool themselves and grow. It worked well and 30 million new jobs were created. The boom he started lasted through even the Clinton years. Reagan also didn't like Communism, and called The former USSR government "evil", and demanded the removal of the Berlin Wall, which they were forced to do. He also re-built the military that was gutted by President Carter.
He also decreased the number of terror incidents against Americans because of his strong military approach. He understood that till this day Iran has declared war on us. This was done in 1979 and is in place still today in 2009.
He also attempted to gut the EPA, turn over our national forrests to logging companies and he also wanted ketchup classified as a vegetable for school children receiving free or reduced fee lunches to indicate he cared about their nutrition.Great!Remember what Regans anti environment ,secretary of the interior James Watt said...after the last tree is felled god will return.James watt under Reagans direction, refused to accept outside conservation groups money to protect federal lands,he as well attempted to de -Authorize National parks so that they could be pilloried by special interest groups.these are the types of people Reagan surrounded himself with.Look up Iran-Contra for example, where under qustioning ,Regan nor any of the other of the law breakers could remember any of it ever taking place.Reagan remains an anti Government Conservative Icon to this day.

Fact sheet on Reagan's Army and Army Air Forces service from 1935-1945 is at the National Museum of the USAF website - nationalmuseum
Reagan started by taking Army extension correspondence courses in 1935 while he was a radio announcer at WHO Des Moines. He officially enlisted in 1937 as a private and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant later that year entering the Officers' Reserve Corps of the Cavalry.
As a reserve officer, Reagan was obliged to report for active duty after Dec. 7, 1941. He almost didn't make it because the mandatory Army physical included a real eye test. Reagan was extremely nearsighted (he faked his eye exam when he enlisted through peeking through his hands using the 'pinhole' trick; if you see 'casual' photos of him from the 1940s-1950s e.g. Screen Actors Guild, he is seen wearing very thick glasses and he was one of the earliest wearers of contact lenses.) Despite his vision and Jack Warner (who wanted him at the studio working)--and with the lack of ready officers undoubtedly working in his favor--he successfully transferred to the Army Air Forces and was assigned to limited (desk) duty in the AAF at his 2nd LT rank by April 1942. Jack Warner undoubtedly played a part in this as he helped to organize the AAF's 1st Motion Picture Unit.
Reagan's active duty included stints as a PR officer and making 'This Is The Army' which was an 'official' Army production. But most of his war was spent at the AAF's 1st Motion Picture Unit at Culver City (colloquially known as Fort Roach because it was at the Hal Roach Studios) and the 18th AAFBU located there. Most of his operational duties were producing and narrating vital (and classified at the time) training films for the AAF and also AAF films for public consumption--he rarely acted in them. However he also performed as Personnel Officer, Post Adjutant, Executive Officer, and even Commanding Officer for these units. Reagan separated at the end of 1945 as a Captain.
Comment: I am of the opinion that Reagan's service in the AAF was the true start of Reagan the executive that the AAF trained him how to manage, particularly the operations of a very busy high-profile base unit, deal with the bureaucracy of government, and to manage a diverse group of people from all walks of life to achieve results. Also the 1st Motion Picture Unit included many of Hollywood's finest talent--actors, cameramen, directors, screenwriters, producers and craftsmen such as modelmakers, set designers, lighting and special effects. Certainly he was remembered for his work there when he resumed his Screen Actors Guild board position in 1946, then elected President of SAG in a time of crisis only two years later, in 1947 (through 1952 and returning 1959-1960. Reagan's start in politics is rightly attributed to his years with SAG--but his time as an executive starts with the AAF.
