The Lafayette Escadrille was a squadron of American pilots who flew for the French air force before the US entered WW1. The name came from the Frenchman, Lafayette, who came to the aid of America and fought in the American Revolution.

During WW2, the Flying Tigers was formed in a similar manner to allow Americans to fight for China against the Japanese before the US entered the war.
