The immediate result of the surrender of Fort Sumter was am agreement that they would evacuate and not surrender. After the surrender, many people pushed for Lincoln to send troops back in to take control of the Forts and save the Union.

The commander of Donelson, General Simon Bolivar Buckner requested terms of surrender. Grant replied: " No terms except unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted. The Battle of Fort Sumter started as a result of the Union intention to resupply the fort in April of 1861. Unwilling to allow the fort to remain in Union hands, South Carolina's military units bombarded the fort into submission between April 12th and 14th, which resulted in the surrender of the fort as well as the beginning of the American Civil War.
