Lincoln's main and only goal was to preserve the Union at all costs. It soon became clear that the Southern rebellion was not going to end quickly as most people on each side expected. France and England continued to trade with the South despite any worries about slavery.

France and England would have been delighted to see a potential US enemy cut in two. Then, the US & the Confederacy could be played against each other in economic and political affairs.

The idea that the British people would not support a slave nation, ignores the fact that Great Britain was not a democratic nation and voting there did not fully take place decades later.

The British did not abolish slavery in their empire to please public opinion.

Independent states rights, or rather sovereignty from an opressive, federalized, centralize government, which had been a main point of debate at the first constitutional congress, and upon which general consensus was reached and agreed upon. At the time the federal government, generally controlled by the northern states, wanted to charge heavy tarifs on imported goods; it was the contention of the southern states that the federal government did not have the jurisdiction to force independent states to do so as this was an area that was not directly addressed in the constitution, which meant that the decision to do so or not rested with the individual state.

General Grant is quoted as saying that if he thought for one minute the war was about slavery, he would resign his commision and present his sword to the south for duty. At the time, there was actually more anti-slavery sentiment in the south than existed in the north.

The South's main aim was to win the civil war, and so continue to live their lives as they had done before the war.
