Germany was not the main enemy in World War 1, although they are often made out to be. The actual enemy was mainly Austria, but, since it fell early, Germany was made to take most the blame, even though it was just brought in by alliance systems. Note that Italy was an allied nation in WWI, but an axis nation in WWII. The alliances were the Triple Alliance, which was the one Germany was in (later called the Central powers), whose major players were Germany, the Austrian Empire, and Turkey, and the Triple Entente (later called the Allied powers), whose members were those listed above.

Countries fell out in World War 1 because of failure to honor agreements or the signing of fresh agreements with enemy countries that counteracted the initial agreements. Other times, e.g. in the case of Italy, the opposing sides made better offers that made some countries abandon their original allies.

The word Blitz is the German word meaning lighting. The correct term for what many call the blitz is the Blitzkrieg, which means lighting war. The Blitzkreig is the war stratagy used by the Germans to invade enemy countries during World War 2

During World War 2, California was part of the United States, so any enemy of the U.S. would, by extension, have been an enemy of California. For example, Italy, Japan, or Germany.
