All US Military branches contain a Chaplin branch, which can accomodate a serviceman's particular religion. The politics of South Vietnam was in constant struggle between the Buddhists and the Catholic minority.
Religion was stamped on GI's dog tags; that was the extent of it. After an exhausting fight (battle), maybe some religion hit some men; but disillusionment ruled most of the men's feelings during the last years of the war. Don't misunderstand; 99.9% of the men spoke to their lord, but almost always in a whisper. Churches and fancy church going clothes aren't necessary nor are they available to men living in knee deep muddy foxholes; or sleeping in wet leech/snake infested jungles.
You don't have to be clean shaven and wearing nice clean clothes and sitting in some nice man made building in order to pray.
Many people still tried to hold on to their religion, while others were afraid of the Communists, or Viet Cong to kill them or make them betray their religious beliefs. Many would change their religion to make it less likely for the Communists to persecute them/challenge them. Many stayed strong with their beliefs and help encourage others who are struggling to believe in God and that God will save them.
The Soviet Union and China were two significant allies of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The war lasted from 1955 to 1975.
