1. The communist superpowers supplied the weapons/technicicans and jet pilot training for North Vietnamese MIG Pilots in both the Soviet Union (MIG-17 and MIG-21)and Red China (MIG-19/J-6 version). 2. The US supplied men & equipment for the war. 3. The communist superpowers were responsible for establishing the rules of fighting the "limited war" in Vietnam. Example 1: if nukes are used; be prepared for the communists to use nukes too. Example 2: if the US invades North Vietnam, be prepared to fight Red China/Soviet Union (as did happen during the Korean War).

The US did not want to risk a nuclear confrontation with the communist superpowers.
Communist superpowers; cold war. If not for them, 'Nam could've been "Desert Stormed."
President Johnson took the war to NORTH Vietnam with aerial warfare. We couldn't invade NORTH Vietnam (without consequences from the communist superpowers), but we could bomb it! We dropped more bombs on North Vietnam than we did in all of WW2! One must bear in mind, that a Vietnam War B-52 could carry 108 bombs. A WW2 bomber could only carry 17 bombs.
The United States and the Soviet Union were the Superpowers after World War 2.
They were major events of the Cold War. The Cold War meant that Democracy and Communism were unable to fight each other conventionally because both possessed nuclear weapons, and whichever side began to lose would have used them. However, they could take sides in internal conflicts around the world. Along with Afganistan, Korea and Vietnam were large-scale examples of Cold War fighting.
