The first incident that began to change American public support for entry into World War 1 was the sinking of the Lusitania cruise ship in 1915 by a German U-boat. In 1916 two large explosions destroyed two munitions factories and it was immediately blamed on German saboteurs. Finally, in 1917 a message that is now known as the Zimmermann Telegram was intercepted and publicly revealed. It was a message from Germany requesting Mexico to attack the US in return for some of their old territory back, namely Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. All of these events, in addition to the Rape of Belgium at the outbreak of war in 1914, galvanized the people into fully supporting a war against Germany.

1. The Sinking of the Lusitania

2. German U-Boats sinking US cruise ships and cargo ships

3. The Zimmerman Telegram

4. The Russian Revolution

As an aside, the Russian revolutions did not cause the US to enter WW 1.
