From a figure of over 2 1/2 million US servicemen; over 300,000 were wounded, and over 58,000 were killed. Over 2 million men made it home un-injured; or, less than half a million men were killed or wounded.

The song was popular during the time when many US troops were returning home from the war in Vietnam. The song was actually about a criminal, having served his sentence, returning to society and trying to find out what his standing in society might be. But then technically, those Rebels/Confederates weren't US servicemen either. Union/Federal/Yankees/Blue Coats/Northerners/etc. were actually US servicemen.
For many US servicemen returning home from Vietnam, one of the LONG TERM effects was NOT talking about the war. Keeping it inside themselves. They had learned early on, that talking about the Vietnam War, produced enemies with their friends, family members, and complete strangers.
